DSEi 13: ST Kinetics Ultimax 100 Mk5

Ah, the STK Ultimax 100 Mk5. The darling of gun bloggers and youtubers, but alas never given the chance to prove itself in the real world. General Dynamics entered it into the USMC IAR competition but it lost to the HK IAR. ST Kinetics continue to promote it at arms shows so maybe one day it someone somewhere will adopt it.

DSEi 13: AEI Twin Magazine Suppressed .50 Rifle

Prototype .50 cal rifle (2nd from bottom)

British firm AEI Systems Ltd make everything from 30mm aircraft cannons to bolt action 7.62mm rifles. At DSEi 13 they had a new prototype .50 caliber anti-material rifle on display. The gun has a long action recoil system and curiously it is fed by two side-mounted magazines. The magazines are selectable, so you could load AP rounds in one magazine and HE rounds in the other.

I am not sure what scenario this gun was designed for. It is possible, I suppose, the idea is that it allows snipers to quickly switch to non-chemical/explosive rounds when targeting humans and switch back when targeting vehicles. This would avoid running afoul of the treaties and international agreements that in theory ban explosive ammunition against human targets.

I like the very deep fluting on that barrel and suppressor. That should help keep it cool when shooting in hot climates.

Degtyaryov DP28 – Semi-Auto Versions For Sale in US

Degtyaryov DP28

Semi-automatic versions of the Degtyaryov DP28 machine gun are being sold in the United States through AIM Surplus.  The DP28 MG was used by the Soviet Union during World War II and beyond.

It used record-like, 47-round magazines.  Due to the shap of the magazines, the gun was nicknamed the “proigryvatel” or “record player.”  These rifles, like the original machine guns, are chambered in 7.62x54r, which was the cartridge used in the Mosin-Nagant rifles.

The guns are assembled from parts by Wise Lite Arms and use a 1953-marked semi-automatic receiver.  Included with the rifle are four of the round magazines and a carrying pouch that holds three mags.  Total price is a hair under $4,500.  These do not appear to be C&R eligible.

Denmark Looking To Adopt New 7.62mm Machine Gun

US Ordnance (USO) M60E6

The Royal Danish Army have been running a competition to select a new GPMG/medium 7.62mm machine gun. I was told that all the well known manufacturers of 7.62mm General Purpose Machine Guns entered into the competition, but my source is bound by an NDA and could not tell me exactly who entered. What he could tell me is that the two finalists are the Heckler & Koch HK121 (pictured below) and the US Ordnance M60E6 (pictured above).

H&K HK121

The HK121 is a brand new design which recently won the German competition to replace their aging MG3 machine guns. The HK121 is being promoted by H&K in a number of different configurations. The version pictured above looks to be an HK121 I (Infantry) model with the forward rail borrowed from the HK121 U (Universal) and for some unknown reason, maybe to keep the weight within spec, the barrel heatshield has been removed. I cannot determine the exact weight of this particular HK121, but for comparison the HK121 I weights 12.4 kg (27.3 lbs) unloaded and without accessories installed.

hk121

The USO M60E6 is not your fathers (grandfathers?) M60. US Ordnance have been tweaking, lightening and improving the performance of the M60 for decades. The most recent well known iteration of the M60 is the M60E4 aka. the Mk43 Mod 0/1 which went into production in 2000. This newer iteration of the design shaves some weight from the Mk43 while adding an improved rail system and bipod. The M60E6 in the photos looks to be the standard model with a short barre (albeit it with a new black/FDE color scheme which I have not seen before). It weighs 9.27 kg (20.44 lbs) unloaded and without accessories.

The old fixed stock has been replaced with a 5-position adjustable stock that has a 4 position adjustable cheek piece (two positions for iron sights and two for optics). The stock also integrates a shoulder rest and hydraulic buffer  The forend/rail/bipod have been upgraded and the folding bipod is now more compact and will not get in the way of accessories mounted on the picatinny rails. The topcover and feed tray has been upgraded for easier one-handed reloading. The cocking handle (not pictured above) is more more ergonomic and easier to operate with either the strong or weak hand. A new heat shield is an optional accessory.

It is not guaranteed that the  US Armed Forces will upgrade their M249 Light Machine Guns to the new Mk3 model because USSOCOM and the NSWC have been developing their own variants and upgrades for many years. The fruits of their labor are the Mk. 46 Mod 0 and Mk 48 Mod 0/1.
